Cummings Cites Burton’s Strategic Plan in Endorsement

STRONG COMMAND PRESENCE, DEEP KNOWLEDGE” HAVE EARNED BURTON RESPECT

Former campaign rivals Wayne Clark and Dr. Tony Cummings with Lakesha Burton

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dr. Tony Cummings, a former U.S. Army Military Police supervisor and longtime JSO officer today formally endorsed former JSO assistant chief Lakesha Burton’s campaign for sheriff.

Cummings is among two former campaign rivals who have endorsed Burton’s campaign in the last week. Former JSO division chief Wayne Clark endorsed Burton last week.

“It is with great enthusiasm that I announce my full support for my good friend and colleague Lakesha Burton for sheriff,” Cummings said. “I am endorsing Lakesha’s candidacy because of her unwavering morality, steadfast leadership and robust strategic plan to address crime in our city.”

At JSO, Cummings worked in both the patrol and detective divisions. His assignments included working as a Field Training Officer, Burglary Investigator, Undercover Narcotics Agent, and Missing Persons Investigator; an extension of JSO’s Homicide Unit. He also provided ethics training to the Community Service Officers formerly employed with the agency.

Burton thanked Cummings and his wife for their support, noting the power of people with differing ideas working together for the betterment of Jacksonville and its citizens.

“I am delighted to welcome the support of Dr. Tony Cummings and his wife Dr. Andrea Cummings, Burton said. “We share a commitment to our city and its people to be the very best. When people with different ideas can join together for a common goal, that’s when you know you’re working on something bigger than us all.”

Cummings added, “I hope that my endorsement serves as a strong signal to the public that Lakesha Burton is without a doubt the right choice to lead the men and women of Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at a time when our city is traumatized by random violence,” he said. “It’s her strong command presence and deep knowledge of JSO’s policies and procedures that has earned her the respect of the officers inside the agency.”
